Makeup

Our culture is mesmerized by makeup and making things look prettier. A quick scroll through social media reveals a plethora of viral trends and ads for the next best product to make you look ‘better.’ But all of those ‘secrets’ are nothing more than skin-deep cover-ups for the truth that lies beneath.

The devil never comes to us as the devil. Rather, he disguises his evil intentions, dressing them up with smooth talk and false kindness. In 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, Paul warns that Satan “masquerades as an angel of light.” And not only him but “his servants [who] also masquerade as servants of righteousness … For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.”

That’s why we need wisdom from God to discern who and what is real. Ephesians 4:11-13 tells us that “Christ Himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers … to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up… and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Meanwhile, the world is promoting selfishness and false peace. In 2 Kings 9:22, the newly anointed King Jehu responded to the deposed corrupt King Joram, “How can there be peace,” Jehu replied, “as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?”

Jezebel had been married to King Ahab, who, because of her, “did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him.” (1 Kings 16:30). But when the time came for her judgment and death, she defiantly “put on eye makeup, arranged her hair and looked out of a window.” (2 Kings 9:30). Instead of responding to Truth with humility, as her husband had done, she proudly clung to the outward facade of a noble queen, which could never conceal “the monsters hiding underneath,” as my song says.

While a bit confrontational, “makeup” was written from a place of “speaking the truth in love” so that “we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.” like it says in Ephesians 4:15. “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” (Ephesians 4:14)

Satan is waging a war on our souls and would love nothing more than for us to be lulled into staying silent in the face of evil. As believers, however, we are called to step into a new and authentic life in Christ with boldness so we can overcome the corruption of pretense and fake truth found in the world. Don’t let the fear of what others might think keep you from speaking out against the lies. Rather, be afraid of what will happen if we DON’T stand up for Truth … it’s time to wake up!
