 <div class="label">33</div><div class="s1">Jacob Meets Esau</div><div class="p"> 1Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants. 2He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear. 3He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.</div><div class="p"> 4But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. 5Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. &#8220;Who are these with you?&#8221; he asked.</div><div class="p">Jacob answered, &#8220;They are the children God has graciously given your servant.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down. 7Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.</div><div class="p"> 8Esau asked, &#8220;What&#8217;s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;To find favor in your eyes, my lord,&#8221; he said.</div><div class="p"> 9But Esau said, &#8220;I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;No, please!&#8221; said Jacob. &#8220;If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably. 11Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.&#8221; And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.</div><div class="p"> 12Then Esau said, &#8220;Let us be on our way; I&#8217;ll accompany you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13But Jacob said to him, &#8220;My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Esau said, &#8220;Then let me leave some of my men with you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;But why do that?&#8221; Jacob asked. &#8220;Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir. 17Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.#33:17 Sukkoth means shelters.</div><div class="p"> 18After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,#33:18 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19For a hundred pieces of silver,#33:19 Hebrew hundred kesitahs; a kesitah was a unit of money of unknown weight and value. he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent. 20There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.#33:20 El Elohe Israel can mean El is the God of Israel or mighty is the God of Israel.</div>

 <div class="p">1Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her. 3His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. 4And Shechem said to his father Hamor, &#8220;Get me this girl as my wife.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.</div><div class="p"> 6Then Shechem&#8217;s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. 7Meanwhile, Jacob&#8217;s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in#34:7 Or against Israel by sleeping with Jacob&#8217;s daughter&#8212;a thing that should not be done.</div><div class="p"> 8But Hamor said to them, &#8220;My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. 9Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. 10You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade#34:10 Or move about freely; also in verse 21 in it, and acquire property in it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11Then Shechem said to Dinah&#8217;s father and brothers, &#8220;Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. 12Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I&#8217;ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> </div>

 <div class="label">22</div><div class="s1">A Prophecy About Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 1A prophecy against the Valley of Vision:</div><div class="q1">What troubles you now,</div><div class="q2">that you have all gone up on the roofs,</div><div class="q1"> 2you town so full of commotion,</div><div class="q2">you city of tumult and revelry?</div><div class="q1">Your slain were not killed by the sword,</div><div class="q2">nor did they die in battle.</div><div class="q1"> 3All your leaders have fled together;</div><div class="q2">they have been captured without using the bow.</div><div class="q1">All you who were caught were taken prisoner together,</div><div class="q2">having fled while the enemy was still far away.</div><div class="q1"> 4Therefore I said, &#8220;Turn away from me;</div><div class="q2">let me weep bitterly.</div><div class="q1">Do not try to console me</div><div class="q2">over the destruction of my people.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 5The Lord, the Lord Almighty, has a day</div><div class="q2">of tumult and trampling and terror</div><div class="q2">in the Valley of Vision,</div><div class="q1">a day of battering down walls</div><div class="q2">and of crying out to the mountains.</div><div class="q1"> 6Elam takes up the quiver,</div><div class="q2">with her charioteers and horses;</div><div class="q2">Kir uncovers the shield.</div><div class="q1"> 7Your choicest valleys are full of chariots,</div><div class="q2">and horsemen are posted at the city gates.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 8The Lord stripped away the defenses of Judah,</div><div class="q2">and you looked in that day</div><div class="q2">to the weapons in the Palace of the Forest.</div><div class="q1"> 9You saw that the walls of the City of David</div><div class="q2">were broken through in many places;</div><div class="q1">you stored up water</div><div class="q2">in the Lower Pool.</div><div class="q1"> 10You counted the buildings in Jerusalem</div><div class="q2">and tore down houses to strengthen the wall.</div><div class="q1"> 11You built a reservoir between the two walls</div><div class="q2">for the water of the Old Pool,</div><div class="q1">but you did not look to the One who made it,</div><div class="q2">or have regard for the One who planned it long ago.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 12The Lord, the Lord Almighty,</div><div class="q2">called you on that day</div><div class="q1">to weep and to wail,</div><div class="q2">to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.</div><div class="q1"> 13But see, there is joy and revelry,</div><div class="q2">slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep,</div><div class="q2">eating of meat and drinking of wine!</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Let us eat and drink,&#8221; you say,</div><div class="q2">&#8220;for tomorrow we die!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: &#8220;Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for,&#8221; says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 15This is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Go, say to this steward,</div><div class="q2">to Shebna the palace administrator:</div><div class="q1"> 16What are you doing here and who gave you permission</div><div class="q2">to cut out a grave for yourself here,</div><div class="q1">hewing your grave on the height</div><div class="q2">and chiseling your resting place in the rock?</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 17&#8220;Beware, the Lord is about to take firm hold of you</div><div class="q2">and hurl you away, you mighty man.</div><div class="q1"> 18He will roll you up tightly like a ball</div><div class="q2">and throw you into a large country.</div><div class="q1">There you will die</div><div class="q2">and there the chariots you were so proud of</div><div class="q2">will become a disgrace to your master&#8217;s house.</div><div class="q1"> 19I will depose you from your office,</div><div class="q2">and you will be ousted from your position.</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. 21I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. 22I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 23I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will become a seat#22:23 Or throne of honor for the house of his father. 24All the glory of his family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots&#8212;all its lesser vessels, from the bowls to all the jars.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;In that day,&#8221; declares the Lord Almighty, &#8220;the peg driven into the firm place will give way; it will be sheared off and will fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut down.&#8221; The Lord has spoken.</div>

 <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1">A Warning Against Hypocrisy</div><div class="p"> 1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2&#8220;The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses&#8217; seat. 3So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people&#8217;s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.</div><div class="p"> 5 &#8220;Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries # 23:5 That is, boxes containing Scripture verses, worn on forehead and arm wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called &#8216;Rabbi&#8217; by others.</div><div class="p"> 8 &#8220;But you are not to be called &#8216;Rabbi,&#8217; for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9And do not call anyone on earth &#8216;father,&#8217; for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11The greatest among you will be your servant. 12For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.</div><div class="s1">Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees</div><div class="p"> 13 &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people&#8217;s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. [14]#23:14 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Mark 12:40 and Luke 20:47.</div><div class="p"> 15 &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.</div><div class="p"> 16 &#8220;Woe to you, blind guides! You say, &#8216;If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.&#8217; 17You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18You also say, &#8216;If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.&#8217; 19You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God&#8217;s throne and by the one who sits on it.</div><div class="p"> 23 &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices&#8212;mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law&#8212;justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.</div><div class="p"> 25 &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.</div><div class="p"> 27 &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.</div><div class="p"> 29 &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30And you say, &#8216;If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.&#8217; 31So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.</div><div class="p"> 37 &#8220;Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, &#8216;Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.&#8217;#23:39 Psalm 118:26&#8221;</div>
