 <div class="label">22</div><div class="s1">Abraham Tested</div><div class="p"> 1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, &#8220;Abraham!&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Here I am,&#8221; he replied.</div><div class="p"> 2Then God said, &#8220;Take your son, your only son, whom you love&#8212;Isaac&#8212;and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5He said to his servants, &#8220;Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, &#8220;Father?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes, my son?&#8221; Abraham replied.</div><div class="p">&#8220;The fire and wood are here,&#8221; Isaac said, &#8220;but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Abraham answered, &#8220;God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.&#8221; And the two of them went on together.</div><div class="p"> 9When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, &#8220;Abraham! Abraham!&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Here I am,&#8221; he replied.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;Do not lay a hand on the boy,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram#22:13 Many manuscripts of the Masoretic Text, Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint and Syriac; most manuscripts of the Masoretic Text a ram behind him caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, &#8220;On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16and said, &#8220;I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18and through your offspring#22:18 Or seed all nations on earth will be blessed,#22:18 Or and all nations on earth will use the name of your offspring in blessings (see 48:20) because you have obeyed me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.</div><div class="s1">Nahor&#8217;s Sons</div><div class="p"> 20Some time later Abraham was told, &#8220;Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor: 21Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), 22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.&#8221; 23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham&#8217;s brother Nahor. 24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.</div>

 <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1">The Death of Sarah</div><div class="p"> 1Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.</div><div class="p"> 3Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.#23:3 Or the descendants of Heth; also in verses 5, 7, 10, 16, 18 and 20 He said, 4&#8220;I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6&#8220;Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. 8He said to them, &#8220;If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf 9so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city. 11&#8220;No, my lord,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Listen to me; I give#23:11 Or sell you the field, and I give#23:11 Or sell you the cave that is in it. I give#23:11 Or sell it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13and he said to Ephron in their hearing, &#8220;Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Ephron answered Abraham, 15&#8220;Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels#23:15 That is, about 10 pounds or about 4.6 kilograms of silver, but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Abraham agreed to Ephron&#8217;s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.</div><div class="p"> 17So Ephron&#8217;s field in Machpelah near Mamre&#8212;both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field&#8212;was deeded 18to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. 19Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Job</div><div class="p"> 1Then Job replied:</div><div class="q1"> 2&#8220;Doubtless you are the only people who matter,</div><div class="q2">and wisdom will die with you!</div><div class="q1"> 3But I have a mind as well as you;</div><div class="q2">I am not inferior to you.</div><div class="q2">Who does not know all these things?</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 4&#8220;I have become a laughingstock to my friends,</div><div class="q2">though I called on God and he answered&#8212;</div><div class="q2">a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless!</div><div class="q1"> 5Those who are at ease have contempt for misfortune</div><div class="q2">as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.</div><div class="q1"> 6The tents of marauders are undisturbed,</div><div class="q2">and those who provoke God are secure&#8212;</div><div class="q2">those God has in his hand.#12:6 Or those whose god is in their own hand</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 7&#8220;But ask the animals, and they will teach you,</div><div class="q2">or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;</div><div class="q1"> 8or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,</div><div class="q2">or let the fish in the sea inform you.</div><div class="q1"> 9Which of all these does not know</div><div class="q2">that the hand of the Lord has done this?</div><div class="q1"> 10In his hand is the life of every creature</div><div class="q2">and the breath of all mankind.</div><div class="q1"> 11Does not the ear test words</div><div class="q2">as the tongue tastes food?</div><div class="q1"> 12Is not wisdom found among the aged?</div><div class="q2">Does not long life bring understanding?</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 13&#8220;To God belong wisdom and power;</div><div class="q2">counsel and understanding are his.</div><div class="q1"> 14What he tears down cannot be rebuilt;</div><div class="q2">those he imprisons cannot be released.</div><div class="q1"> 15If he holds back the waters, there is drought;</div><div class="q2">if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.</div><div class="q1"> 16To him belong strength and insight;</div><div class="q2">both deceived and deceiver are his.</div><div class="q1"> 17He leads rulers away stripped</div><div class="q2">and makes fools of judges.</div><div class="q1"> 18He takes off the shackles put on by kings</div><div class="q2">and ties a loincloth#12:18 Or shackles of kings / and ties a belt around their waist.</div><div class="q1"> 19He leads priests away stripped</div><div class="q2">and overthrows officials long established.</div><div class="q1"> 20He silences the lips of trusted advisers</div><div class="q2">and takes away the discernment of elders.</div><div class="q1"> 21He pours contempt on nobles</div><div class="q2">and disarms the mighty.</div><div class="q1"> 22He reveals the deep things of darkness</div><div class="q2">and brings utter darkness into the light.</div><div class="q1"> 23He makes nations great, and destroys them;</div><div class="q2">he enlarges nations, and disperses them.</div><div class="q1"> 24He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason;</div><div class="q2">he makes them wander in a trackless waste.</div><div class="q1"> 25They grope in darkness with no light;</div><div class="q2">he makes them stagger like drunkards.</div><div class="b"></div>

 <div class="p">31He told them another parable: &#8220;The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 33He told them still another parable: &#8220;The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds#13:33 Or about 27 kilograms of flour until it worked all through the dough.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;I will open my mouth in parables,</div><div class="q2">I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.&#8221;#13:35 Psalm 78:2</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Weeds Explained</div><div class="p"> 36Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, &#8220;Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37He answered, &#8220;The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, 39and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.</div><div class="p"> 40 &#8220;As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.</div><div class="s1">The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl</div><div class="p"> 44 &#8220;The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.</div><div class="p"> 45 &#8220;Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Net</div><div class="p"> 47 &#8220;Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.</div><div class="p"> 51 &#8220;Have you understood all these things?&#8221; Jesus asked.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> 52He said to them, &#8220;Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">A Prophet Without Honor</div><div class="p"> 53When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. &#8220;Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?&#8221; they asked. 55&#8220;Isn&#8217;t this the carpenter&#8217;s son? Isn&#8217;t his mother&#8217;s name Mary, and aren&#8217;t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56Aren&#8217;t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?&#8221; 57And they took offense at him.</div><div class="p">But Jesus said to them, &#8220;A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 58And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.</div>

 <div class="p">1Brothers and sisters, my heart&#8217;s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God&#8217;s righteousness. 4Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.</div><div class="p"> 5Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: &#8220;The person who does these things will live by them.&#8221;#10:5 Lev. 18:5 6But the righteousness that is by faith says: &#8220;Do not say in your heart, &#8216;Who will ascend into heaven?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#10:6 Deut. 30:12 (that is, to bring Christ down) 7&#8220;or &#8216;Who will descend into the deep?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#10:7 Deut. 30:13 (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8But what does it say? &#8220;The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,&#8221;#10:8 Deut. 30:14 that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9If you declare with your mouth, &#8220;Jesus is Lord,&#8221; and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11As Scripture says, &#8220;Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.&#8221;#10:11 Isaiah 28:16 (see Septuagint) 12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile&#8212;the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13for, &#8220;Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.&#8221;#10:13 Joel 2:32</div><div class="p"> 14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?
