 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">Setting Up the Lamps</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Speak to Aaron and say to him, &#8216;When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the Lord commanded Moses. 4This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold&#8212;from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern the Lord had shown Moses.</div><div class="s1">The Setting Apart of the Levites</div><div class="p"> 5The Lord said to Moses: 6&#8220;Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. 7To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes. And so they will purify themselves. 8Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.#8:8 Or purification offering; also in verse 12 9Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and assemble the whole Israelite community. 10You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. 11Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, using one for a sin offering to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. 13Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to the Lord. 14In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting. 16They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. 17Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel. 19From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement for them to purify them. 22After that, the Levites came to do their work at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p"> 23The Lord said to Moses, 24&#8220;This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting, 25but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. 26They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work. This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">The Passover</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt. He said, 2&#8220;Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover at the appointed time. 3Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month, in accordance with all its rules and regulations.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover, 5and they did so in the Desert of Sinai at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p"> 6But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean on account of a dead body. So they came to Moses and Aaron that same day 7and said to Moses, &#8220;We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lord&#8217;s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Moses answered them, &#8220;Wait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9Then the Lord said to Moses, 10&#8220;Tell the Israelites: &#8216;When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate the Lord&#8217;s Passover, 11but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations. 13But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people for not presenting the Lord&#8217;s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;A foreigner residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord&#8217;s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Cloud Above the Tabernacle</div><div class="p"> 15On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. 16That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. 18At the Lord&#8217;s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord&#8217;s order and did not set out. 20Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord&#8217;s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23At the Lord&#8217;s command they encamped, and at the Lord&#8217;s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord&#8217;s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.</div>

He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus asked him, &#8220;Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 49When Jesus&#8217; followers saw what was going to happen, they said, &#8220;Lord, should we strike with our swords?&#8221; 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.</div><div class="p"> 51But Jesus answered, &#8220;No more of this!&#8221; And he touched the man&#8217;s ear and healed him.</div><div class="p"> 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, &#8220;Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour&#8212;when darkness reigns.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Peter Disowns Jesus</div><div class="p"> 54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, &#8220;This man was with him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 57But he denied it. &#8220;Woman, I don&#8217;t know him,&#8221; he said.</div><div class="p"> 58A little later someone else saw him and said, &#8220;You also are one of them.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Man, I am not!&#8221; Peter replied.</div><div class="p"> 59About an hour later another asserted, &#8220;Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 60Peter replied, &#8220;Man, I don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re talking about!&#8221; Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: &#8220;Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.&#8221; 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.</div><div class="s1">The Guards Mock Jesus</div><div class="p"> 63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and demanded, &#8220;Prophesy! Who hit you?&#8221; 65And they said many other insulting things to him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before Pilate and Herod</div><div class="p"> 66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67&#8220;If you are the Messiah,&#8221; they said, &#8220;tell us.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Jesus answered, &#8220;If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 70They all asked, &#8220;Are you then the Son of God?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He replied, &#8220;You say that I am.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 71Then they said, &#8220;Why do we need any more testimony?  <div class="p">27When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, 28shouting, &#8220;Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.&#8221; 29(They had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)</div><div class="p"> 30The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. 31While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.</div><div class="p"> 33The commander came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done. 34Some in the crowd shouted one thing and some another, and since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. 35When Paul reached the steps, the violence of the mob was so great he had to be carried by the soldiers. 36The crowd that followed kept shouting, &#8220;Get rid of him!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Paul Speaks to the Crowd</div><div class="p"> 37As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, &#8220;May I say something to you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Do you speak Greek?&#8221; he replied. 38&#8220;Aren&#8217;t you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness some time ago?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39Paul answered, &#8220;I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 40After receiving the commander&#8217;s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic#21:40 Or possibly Hebrew; also in 22:2:</div>
