Living in Increase (Part 3) - Increase in PurposeSample
Called to Commune
You have been called to commune with God. Communing with God means to fellowship or to share your life with Him. Communing is true intimacy with God. This is done through prayer, meditation, and walking in stride with Him. The Bible declares in James 4:8 that if we draw close to God, He will draw near to us. To commune with God implies a desire for nearness on our part. Throughout God’s Word, we are promised that God honors our desire to be near Him.
When the Israelites were in captivity in Egypt, God made a promise to Moses. He told him He would deliver them from their oppressors and take them as His people. God continued speaking to Moses and promised He would be their God (Exodus 6:1-13). Later, God told His people to be careful to follow the commands He had given them so that things may go well with them (Deuteronomy 12:28). The Israelites continued to disobey God’s commands even after several warnings that things would not go well if they continued. As we see from the Israelites, to reject God’s commands is to reject God’s reign and governance.
Ultimately, rejecting God’s commands is a rejection of God. In a previous month, we discussed that God, speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, told His chosen people that they would be exiled for 70 years due to their rejection of Him. Still, God promised to give these same people hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:10-11). When we continue reading verse 12 in Jeremiah 29, God says that the Israelites will seek Him and find Him when they do it with all their heart. This is a promise of renewed fellowship.
In Jeremiah 29:12, notice that the people seek first, not God. This is because God never leaves or abandons us (Deuteronomy 31:8). The Israelites had abandoned fellowship with God to choose fellowship with the world’s customs.
I am thankful for a God who sits high but looks on the lowly (Psalm 136:8) and who wants to be near me. God wants to be near you. We have fellowship with God through Christ by the Holy Spirit.
“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place; 4 What is man that You think of him, and a son of man that You are concerned about him?” - Psalm 8:3-4
You have been called to commune with God.

Action Step: Pray this prayer: "Lord, you created the galaxies. You flung the moon into the sky. Yet, You think of me and desire to be close to me. I am thankful. Thank You for never leaving and remaining faithful through the ages. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Lord, I desire to be near You. As I draw close to You, I know that You will certainly draw close to me. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen."
