Prepare the Way: A 21-Day Reading Plan Through John by Justeina BrownleeSample
Day 6: Pass the Test
Read John 6
In today's reading, Jesus performs the miracle of feeding five thousand people, but before He does, He tests Philip by asking, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” (John 6:5). Philip responds logically, estimating the cost, but Jesus wasn't seeking a practical solution—He was testing Philip’s faith. Jesus already knew how He would meet the need, but He wanted Philip and the other disciples to realize that God’s Power is not limited by Earthly resources.
When Andrew presents a boy with five loaves and two fish, it still seems impossible to feed the crowd. Yet Jesus multiplies this small offering to feed thousands, teaching the disciples that no matter how limited their resources, God can provide abundantly.
This miracle served as training for the disciples. It helped them trust in God’s Provision when they would later face seemingly insurmountable challenges. Like the disciples, we face situations that test our faith, but these tests are opportunities for us to see how God can work through us.
Jesus knew the answer before He asked the question. Similarly, in our lives, He knows how He will provide, but He allows us to face tests so we can grow in faith and reliance on Him. When we offer what little we have, God can multiply it to accomplish great things.
Reflection Questions:
- What challenge in your life feels like a test of faith? How can you trust God’s Provision in that situation?
- Do you ever feel like your resources are too small to make an impact? How can you offer what you have to God, trusting Him to multiply it?
