Born to Save: The Christmas Story of Jesus

DAY 4 OF 5

Finding Courage in God’s Plan

Joseph faced an intense struggle. Upon discovering Mary’s pregnancy, he wrestled with questions of honor, trust, and reputation. As he weighed his options, God intervened. An angel appeared in a dream, bringing him clarity and consolation. “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife,” the angel assured him. With this message, Joseph received both the courage and confirmation he needed. Mary’s child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and His name would be Jesus, the Savior of the world.

The angel’s address, “son of David,” reminded Joseph of his unique role in God’s unfolding plan. Though he wasn’t Jesus’ biological father, his legal connection to David’s lineage would confirm Jesus’ rightful place as the Messiah. By accepting this role, Joseph would formally adopt Jesus, linking Him to the line of David. Through this act of courage, Joseph would pass down a heritage that fulfilled ancient prophecies. Joseph’s silent but steady obedience aligned him with the work God was doing to redeem the world.

Joseph’s task, however, wouldn’t be easy. Even with the angel’s assurance, he faced the challenge of public perception. To the outside world, Mary’s pregnancy appeared scandalous. Joseph would have to endure rumors and suspicion, as people questioned the circumstances of Jesus’ birth. Even in Jesus’ adult life, accusations of illegitimacy persisted, evidence of how deeply this stigma lingered. Yet, Joseph’s obedience looked beyond earthly judgments to God’s approval. Joseph was willing to trust God with his reputation, understanding that sometimes God’s work involves being misunderstood.

The angel’s message didn’t stop at explaining the divine nature of Jesus’ conception. Joseph was also given a powerful revelation: the very purpose of Jesus’ life. The Child was to be called “Jesus” (meaning “Yahweh saves”), because He would save His people from their sins. The angel clarified that Jesus wasn’t coming to liberate Israel from political oppression or worldly struggles, as some expected. His mission was far greater. He came to deliver humanity from the deepest bondage of all: sin. This salvation would address our truest need, restoring our relationship with God and offering eternal life.

This truth confronts our own expectations of salvation. Today’s world often seeks relief from temporary struggles, financial concerns, or personal achievements. But Jesus’ purpose goes beyond mere comfort or success; He came to save us from sin and its eternal consequences. Our greatest need is not external but internal—a restored relationship with God, our Creator.

Have you embraced Jesus as the Savior, who died for your sins? Let this truth reshape your understanding of Jesus’ mission and what it means to be saved. The salvation Christ offers is not a temporary solution. It is eternal. Trust in Him.
