For the Purpose of Rebuke

We live in a unique time (I wonder if every generation has thought the same thing). We have many opportunities to give opinions about any given topic or situation through media. Rebuke (correction) or disapproval of actions that are not popular within our society happens often. In mainstream media, this is known as “cancel culture.” When something doesn’t line up with what society approves, it’s immediately canceled or removed. However, what is considered “acceptable” can change from year to year or even day to day. It’s hard to keep up! Fortunately for us as believers, God, His Word, and His standards remain the same.

Before we move forward, we must all be on the same page with the definition of “rebuke.” What comes to mind when you hear that word? Probably not butterflies and rainbows. It makes us a little uneasy to think about it happening to us. However, Proverbs 27:5-6 states, “Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” “Rebuke” is translated from the Greek wordelegchó, which means “to reprimand and convict by exposing a wrong.” Proverbs 27:5-6 gives us an example of a friend helping another friend by exposing a wrong in his life.

As growing believers, we should welcome biblical rebuke. We should want Scripture and other believers to expose the wrong in our lives. And not only does the Scripture expose the wrong, but it also shows us the right way, the path of life (Psalm 16:11)!

When we make God the Boss, we recognize Him as the King of His Kingdom, a King who can rule our lives as He deems. Fortunately, His ways are better than ours, and His thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). Growing believers don’t want to continue in deception. Instead, we recognize that temporary discomfort by rebuke is better than a lifetime of deception.
