DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Examples of Contending in Faith

Scripture References: 2 Timothy 4:7, 1 Samuel 1, Colossians 3:23

The Bible is filled with examples of believers who contended in their faith, showing us what it looks like to press on and persevere in various areas of life. One such example is Paul’s declaration at the end of his life: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). For Paul, contending meant enduring persecution, physical hardships, imprisonment, and even moments of isolation. Yet, he never lost sight of his calling or the faith that anchored him. Paul’s life teaches us that contending is not a one-time effort but a lifelong journey. Even in his last days, he could look back with assurance, knowing he had given everything for the sake of the Gospel.

Another example of contending is found in the story of Hannah, a woman who longed for a child but was unable to conceive. In 1 Samuel 1, we see her coming before God in desperation, pouring out her heart in prayer. Year after year, she endured ridicule and disappointment, yet she continued to bring her pain and her hope before the Lord. Hannah’s persistence in prayer led to the birth of Samuel, who would become one of Israel’s greatest prophets. Her story shows us that contending often involves a deep, persistent prayer life. Sometimes, God’s timing doesn’t align with our expectations, but as we contend in prayer, our faith is strengthened, and we grow closer to Him.

Contending is not limited to big, dramatic acts of faith. It can also be found in our daily efforts to live faithfully. We might contend in our relationships, our work, or our ministry. In marriage, we contend by loving selflessly, forgiving, and building a partnership that honors God. In family life, we contend by praying for our children, guiding them in truth, and standing firm in our values. In our work, we contend by doing everything “unto the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), seeking to honor Him in our diligence and integrity.

Contending isn’t always easy; it requires resilience, patience, and trust. But through it, we are transformed. God refines our character, strengthens our faith, and draws us closer to His heart. Reflect on the areas in your life where you are contending. Ask God to reveal His purpose in these struggles and to give you the strength to press on.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Who in the Bible inspires you in their contending for faith, and why?
  2. What does contending in your own life look like right now? How can you incorporate faith and persistence in these areas?
