Finding Rest in a Restless MarketplaceSample
God’s Plan and Provision
As we step into certain seasons of life, we may sometimes feel lost and begin questioning our calling or purpose.
I’ve been in that kind of season myself. I wrestled with God.
During that time, for some reason, I remembered my lecturer from my days at Singapore Bible College—more than two decades ago (though I didn’t graduate 😊). I tried looking him up on the school’s website, but there was no trace of him.
One day, I decided to google his name. To my surprise, I found a simple website belonging to a church in the United States. I figured, why not? So, I sent an email to the church, though I didn’t have high hopes. I wasn’t even sure it was the same person I was looking for 😊.
Not long after, I received a pleasantly surprising reply from him! He briefly shared his journey since leaving Singapore. Now semi-retired, he serves as an Archdeacon, mentoring Anglican priests in New York. In a fatherly manner, he asked—only if I didn’t mind—if I would share the milestones of my life with him.
I wrote him a long reply, thanking God for His blessings yet also expressing my restlessness. I mentioned how I felt that my life was “mediocre,”—hinting at a quiet disappointment as I felt I hadn’t achieved much, unlike others.
Shortly after, he responded. He didn’t lecture me. His words were gentle, just like they were years ago when he put his remarks on my assignment paper. He simply wrote:
Henry,
What a lovely story! These are, indeed, milestones of God’s faithfulness.
- I am preaching next Sunday from Exodus 16:2-15. And the word God gave me is this:
- God has a plan for us.
- He will provide all we need to fulfil that plan. We need no other provision. I need not ask God to fulfil somebody else’s plan in my life – for his plan for me and His provision for that plan are all that I need to be pleasing to him.
Bless you!
As I read his email, my eyes welled up with tears. It hit me—our focus only needs to be on Jesus, and He is enough. If He has a unique calling and purpose for us, we can trust that He will provide everything we need to fulfil it.

It feels normal to respond this way because much of our lives revolve around our vocations. Yet the deepest cries of our hearts for meaning and self-worth are fully satisfied in Christ Jesus. Our hearts were made to find rest and fulfilment in Him. Follow this 6-day Bible Plan to find rest in a restless world of marketplace.
