Blessed by God

DAY 3 OF 5

God's Blessings are Aggressive

We have already seen how God desires to bless His children, but it is worth a second look to see the intensity of that desire. We often have difficulty in thinking that God does want to bless us, and most of us seldom see the blessings of God as being in the aggressive pursuit of us. However, the reality is that just as God pursues us as the initiator in our salvation, the whole of the blessings of God for us is actively, aggressively in pursuit of us who seek to walk in obedience to God.

In Deuteronomy 28, the entire chapter is devoted to the rewards of obedience to God and the penalty for disobedience to God. In both cases, there is great detail used to describe the when, where, and how of either the blessings or the penalties to be received.

And that is just the beginning. Obedience results in our blessing whether in the city and the country; in the offspring of our body or of our animals and crops; in our basket or our kneading bowl; indoors or outdoors.

The most amazing part of this is what is said about all these blessings in verse 2 of this chapter, "All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God."

A more colloquial way to express this statement while still being accurate in the meaning would be to say, "All these blessings will chase you down and jump on you." The picture is overtaken from behind by the blessings of God. This conveys to us that God's blessings are in no way passive or reluctant but rather the opposite. The blessings of God are aggressive in their pursuit of those who walk in obedience to God. There is a relentless determination in the heart of God to bless those who seek to obey His Word. We don't have to pursue the blessings of God. If we pursue God Himself, His blessings will pursue us.
