The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a YearSample
Week 11. Day 2. Judges 4-8.
Ch 4-5 Deborah. This is a brilliant story! Here’s a reminder of the characters to help you follow:
Israelites:
- Deborah – prophetess and judge
- Barak – tasked with commanding the army
Non-Israelites
- Jabin – Canaanite king who oppressed Israel
- Sisera – Canaanite army commander
- Heber and his wife Jael – friends of Jabin
As so often in Scripture, a great deliverance is followed by a song! (cf Ex 15) Deborah’s song in Judges 5 is the most positive note in the book. What are the theological emphases of her song?
Judg 6-8 Gideon (also known as Jerubbaal). Gideon is an intriguing character. He shows faith, and acts as a deliverer. But he also acts out of fear (instead of trusting God).
Bonus: Is Gideon presented as a good model to follow?
Why / why not?
About this Plan
The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
