The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 51 OF 365

Week 8. Day 2. Deuteronomy 4.

This is a key chapter of Deuteronomy, and there is a lot in here, so we’re going a bit slower today. Before we read the 10 commandments in ch5, this chapter sets out the motivation to keep the law. Yahweh’s nearness is experienced through torah (law)

What are the motivations to obey the law?

(v1-40, but esp. v1-14)

Why are images prohibited? (v15-20)

What future (sequence of events) does God predict for the people? (v25-31)

For reflection:

'It would be difficult to imagine a more compelling case for love-driven law keeping than the one made by Moses in Deuteronomy 4.' (Hamilton, God's Glory in Salvation through Judgment, 122)

Do you resonate with this?

Is there anything in Deuteronomy 4 that changes how you think about God's law?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
