The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 215 OF 365

Week 31. Day 5. Proverbs 26-31.

In Ch 26 notice the focus on two key characters in Proverbs: the fool (v1-12) and the sluggard (v13-16)

What do we learn about each?

Ch 30 and 31 are some what different to the rest of the book.

Ch 30 ‘The words of Agur’ reflect a slightly different perspective to the rest of the book. They suggest that even for someone who fears the Lord, life may not always be easy. This is the perspective that Ecclesiastes and Job will develop in more detail – and a perspective that prevents us reading Proverbs too woodenly.

Ch 31 includes the description of ‘the wife of noble character’.

A wrong reading of this chapter would be to see this as a burdensome standard for women to match up to, as it is such an idealised picture. But it is striking that the picture of virtue that concludes the book is a woman – perhaps in some ways echoing ‘lady wisdom’ who we have also seen throughout the book.

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
