The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 205 OF 365

Week 30. Day 2. Psalms 113-119.

[Note: as the reading is longer today, you may wish to save reading some of Ps 119 for day 5, when the reading is shorter.]

Ps 113-118 The Egyptian Hallel

These psalms came to be used to celebrate the deliverance from Egypt in Passover celebrations. ‘Hallel’ means ‘praise’ - hence ‘Hallelujah’ meaning ‘Praise Yah(weh)’ These were almost certainly the psalms that Jesus sang with his disciples at the last supper (e.g. Mk 14:26)

See if you can spot references (either explicit or implicit) to the Exodus in these psalms

Ps 118 is the climax of these praise Psalms. What is it about?

Ps 119 The Psalm of God’s word

This is a long psalm, so rather than getting lost in the detail, try to see the overall picture being painted.

  • What do we learn of God and his word?
  • What do we learn of the psalmist?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
