The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 163 OF 365

Week 24. Day 2. Hosea 8-14.

These chapters continue to focus on the behaviour of Israel.

Ch 11 This is a bright moment of hope in this section.

Why do you think the people are to remember the Exodus?

How do we see God’s heart towards his people in this chapter?

(note: ‘Ephraim’ is another name for God’s people)

The remembrance of the Exodus is to remind Israel that Yahweh will bear with his wayward people, just as he did in the wilderness, and though he judges them, he will save them through the judgment, revealing his justice and mercy and getting glory for his name. (Hamilton, God’s Glory in Salvation Through Judgment, 238-9)

Ch 13:6 Notice that it is when things were going well for God’s people that they forgot him. Is there a lesson for us here?

Ch 14 God calls his people to return (key word in the prophets) to him. But notice how God’s heart towards his people is what makes this return both possible and desirable (v4-7)

14:9 The book of Hosea is very much like Psalm 1, in which 2 ways are presented.

Bonus question to ponder: What is the gospel according to Hosea?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
