The Empathetic Touch
Mark 1:40-45 tells the story of a leper who approached Jesus. He knelt and begged for healing. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.” Jesus was more than willing and was moved by his plea. He reached out to touch the man. One version (NIV) mentions that Jesus was angry or indignant, but why would the man’s request make Jesus angry?
My Bible footnote gives this explanation: The person with leprosy was certain that Jesus could heal him, but he wasn’t sure that it was God’s will. The leper allowed his fears and doubts about Jesus’ authority to heal to get the best of him. Regardless, Jesus touched the leprous man, showing empathy and breaking the social stigma of lepers.
Jesus is primarily concerned with the man’s soul and was empathetic to the ostracized situation he found himself in. He was also frustrated with the social norms stemming from the societal pressures of touching a leper. Lepers were deemed unclean and untouchable and were usually forgotten. By healing the leper, Jesus asserts His authority over physical and spiritual conditions, showing that His mission includes breaking down barriers and offering healing to those considered outcasts.
The leper’s statement, “If you will, you can make me clean,” reflects a mixture of faith and uncertainty. Jesus’ response affirms the leper’s faith while demonstrating His compassion and willingness to heal. However, Jesus doesn’t always offer healing as a solution to our suffering and pain. Experiencing unanswered prayers, especially concerning healing, can be deeply challenging and painful.
The truth is Jesus knows the deep places where we hurt and long for healing. While we may not fully understand why healing doesn’t occur, seeking to understand God's character can bring comfort. Scripture emphasizes that God is loving, compassionate, and present in our suffering (see Psalm 34:18).
Healing can take many forms—not just physical. Emotional and spiritual healing are equally important. Sometimes, the journey through suffering can lead to deeper spiritual growth or greater empathy for others. Jesus’ response in Mark 1:40-42 was to touch the untouchable.
This story emphasizes His beautiful, empathic heart, which connects him with each of us in our struggles, and He knows all too well the pain of isolation and suffering. His healing of the leper highlights His mission to bring hope and restoration to the marginalized and suffering.
