Advent: Join the TriumphSample
The Scripture:
"I will make you and the woman hate each other. Your children and her children will be enemies. Her son will crush your head. And you will bite his heel” (Genesis 3:15, NIRV).
The Story:
I don’t know about you, but I do not like snakes. If you have a snake for a pet good for you – I will never be coming over to your house. Now, I wouldn’t say I am scared of snakes, but also if one crosses my path, I’m going to run in the opposite direction and may not go outside for a month. Our Scripture today is a unique one because it is talking about snakes and a Son – but it never uses anyone’s name. That is because this verse is the first ever verse in the Bible that points to Jesus and tells us how He will save us and bring Victory.
Yesterday, we read how God created humans and how everything was perfect. We were made for God and it was going well because humans lived with God and did life with Him. But God gave the first humans, Adam and Eve, a rule. He told them to not eat from this one Tree: you can do anything else, just don’t eat the fruit from this one Tree. But they ate anyway.
Now, you may think it’s silly that they couldn’t listen to God and follow one rule. You might also think it’s silly that the first humans got in trouble for eating fruit when you don't get in trouble when you don’t eat your fruit. That is not the point.
The point is that Adam and Eve disobeyed God. They chose their way over God’s Way, and that’s called sin. Sin is anything you say, think, or do that breaks God’s Rules and breaks God’s Heart. But, Adam and Eve did not do this on their own: they were tempted by a snake, who we now know is Satan. Satan is the devil and he does not want us to follow God. He wants to draw people away from God. He wants to draw people away from Life.
All of this leads to a moment where God speaks and tells the snake that one day, a Son will come from Eve’s family tree. The Son will crush the snake’s head and the snake will bite the Son’s Heel. This is the Good News of Jesus. In Humanity's lowest moment where we are separated from God and can no longer walk with Him, or be Best Friends with Him, God promises one day Jesus will come.
The Triumph:
This verse is one of the most victorious verses in the Bible. God gives Hope in the middle of a defeat that Jesus will be Victorious. Christmas is a celebration that the Snake Crusher is born and will bring Victory! Jesus was attacked by Satan and Jesus did die on the Cross. We have Joy knowing that God is Victorious and Jesus came back to life!
