[How Firm a Foundation] Creation

DAY 5 OF 5

Creation and meaning

Creation was designed and ordered by a rational, purposeful God. He made humans, blessed them, and encouraged them to be fruitful, multiply, and have dominion over the earth. We experience life to the fullest if we stay within the bounds of Scripture. God’s commands are intended for human flourishing.

If we refuse to live under God’s authority, we can be assured that our lives will be marked by confusion and will ultimately end in destruction. It’s the Devil’s lie that we can experience freedom apart from God’s authority (Gen. 3:1–19). True freedom exists for those who follow the call of wisdom, found in God’s Word, and steer clear of the seductive and deceitful voice of folly.

In the August 31, 2016 issue of New Scientist, in answer to the question, “What Is the Meaning of Life?” Graham Lawton wrote:

The harsh answer is “It has none.” Your life may feel like a big deal to you, but it’s actually a random blip of matter and energy in an uncaring and impersonal universe. When it ends, a few people will remember you for a while, but they will die too. Even if you make the history books, your contribution will soon be forgotten. Humans will go extinct; Earth and the sun will be destroyed. Eventually the universe itself will end. Against this appalling reality, how can a human life have any real meaning?

If what Lawton says is true, then the biblical teaching on creation is wrong. There is no God. There is no truth, no moral standards, no future, and no hope. Are you comfortable dismissing the truth: “In the beginning, God?” If so, you are joining the ranks of folly: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’ ” (Psalm 14:1). Please don’t be a fool.

Every one of us is on a quest for meaning. God’s Word tells us where we came from and who we are. It informs our purpose in life and ultimately points to future hope. There is a God who made everything and is sovereign over all. This God loves us. He invites us to turn from folly and live. This is what Jesus said: “The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25–26)

Jesus, I believe in You. God, You created me for a life of meaning. Your Spirit is with me. Help me to live wisely and walk in Your ways, according to Your Word.

Day 4

About this Plan

[How Firm a Foundation] Creation

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Explore how the Trinity was present at creation, and Jesus’ unique role as the Logos, the incarnate Word. The biblical teaching of creation also provides a basis for truth, morality, science, and a life of meaning and hope. This devotional will encourage you and deepen your faith.
