Ecclesiastes Book Study - TheStorySample
Living In The Dark
We live our lives in the dark. We don’t know what it is that we’re building with our days. We don’t know where the daily steps we take are leading us. We make our choices without any way of knowing where they will take us. We don’t know what our lives are for, what story they are telling.
Our entire lives are an act of faith, whether we are aware of it or not. If we do not know the outcome of any of our actions, how they will be received, or their future effect, then everything we do is an offering to God. We can never say, “I will do this, and it will accomplish this.” We can only, knowingly or unknowingly, offer up to God our intentions and allow him to do what he will with them. This transforms our lives from the execution of a plan to the setting out upon a great adventure, following a loving guide who knows our needs and the desires of our hearts better than we do ourselves.
So how then shall we live? By doing the work before us that we can see to do. We shoulder the burden in front of us. We take the pleasure in front of us. We take the steps we can see to take, and trust that the next ones will be revealed when we require them to be. We do what seems best to us, in the moment we find ourselves in, and we trust in God to make of it something beautiful and true.
Respond in Prayer
Dear God, please help us to trust you when all we do seems meaningless and all our actions pointless. Please lead and guide us for your name's sake, and take us where you want us to go.

About this Plan
Ecclesiastes is tough to read! The author, Solomon, is deeply reflective and concludes that everything is meaningless. Interestingly, these words are still relatable three thousand years later. Is everything meaningless? Why is this book in the Bible? Study the book of Ecclesiastes with the Story Bible guide, exploring what it meant when it was first written and what it means to us today.
