HOPE FOR ANOTHER TODAY

Over the past few days, we examined our tendency to take our days on earth for granted. And many of us may already be having a hard time enjoying today once again. But the purpose of this Plan is not to make us feel guilty or condemned. For the next two days, we will look at the beautiful lessons from King Hezekiah’s story that we can take with us going forward.

There is a great message of hope to be found in the fact that Hezekiah’s deadly diagnosis could be reversed. I would think that a death sentence from God’s prophet is pretty final. But God always leaves room for a miracle. “Go back to Hezekiah, the leader of my people. Tell him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you, and three days from now you will get out of bed and go to the Temple of the Lord.” (2 Kings 20:5, NLT).

I don’t know why God sometimes allows us to go the long way around. Surely, He could have prevented Hezekiah’s illness from the start, skipping the whole drama and lots of tears. But that is where God makes Himself most visible to us - in the impossible.

In the New Testament, Jesus teaches us this principle on many occasions. In John 11, we see that there is always hope for another today. Even after Lazarus had died, all was not lost. “Jesus responded, ‘Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?’... And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth.” (v. 40-44, NLT).

Let us find comfort in the fact that there is always hope in Christ. Nothing can change God’s ability to turn any situation around. There is always hope for another today! “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and the earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!” (Jeremiah 32:17, NLT).
