Advent Series: Who Is Jesus? (Isaiah 9:6)

DAY 3 OF 4

"For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace"

Isaiah 9:6

In calling Jesus the “Everlasting Father,” Isaiah points to His timeless love and care for us. Like a good father, Jesus provides, protects, and remains with us through every season of life. His love is not fleeting; it is constant and unchanging, extending from eternity past to eternity future.

In my practice as a Christian Mental Health coach, I often have to work with clients to correct their view of God as a good and loving father.

Many who come to me have had fathers that failed them. Even fathers that have hurt them deeply.

But the good news is that Jesus as our Everlasting Father is NOT a reflection of our earthly dads, he is the PERFECTION of them.

Jesus, in His character, reveals God’s heart as a Father who cares deeply for His children.

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Unlike human relationships that may leave us disappointed and hurt, His commitment to us is perfect. Loving. Full of grace and mercy.

Jesus, our Everlasting Father, knows each of us intimately (Psalm 139:1-4) and calls us by name (John 10:3). He understands our weaknesses and meets us with compassion. He is a Father who does not abandon us and his love endures forever.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How has your relationship with your father colored the way you see Jesus?
  2. What does it mean that Jesus is the perfection of our earthly fathers?
  3. How might you approach Jesus today as a child of God?
