The Parable of the Loving FatherSample
Disappointed by life
“And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.” (Luke 15:14)
The youngest son squandered his money in reckless living, as we read yesterday. Now he had the freedom to choose for himself what he wanted to do and not do. I imagine he had a great time and certainly did not plan to return to the narrow-minded life at his father's home. But after a while, the money ran out. Then the party was over. Moreover, a severe famine arose. It got to the point where the young man had nothing left to eat and had to hire himself out to feed pigs. That was not exactly the life he had envisioned! To make matters worse, this job did not even earn enough to fill his stomach. He was in total despair. Through his hunger and loneliness, the young man began to long for his father. Life on the farm was clearly better than his current life. Even the hired servants there had enough to eat. Although the young man was ashamed of his behavior, he decided to go back. Not to claim his previous position as if nothing had happened, but to ask if he could work as a servant for his father.
Have you ever been in trouble through your own fault? How did you search for a solution then?

About this Plan
Jesus told a lot of parables: stories about everyday life, but with a deeper spiritual meaning. The parable of the loving father shows us God’s gracious attitude towards people, and questions our own attitude towards God and fellow humans.
