The Christ of ChristmasSample
Day 7: Elizabeth’s Eyes
Elizabeth had spirit-filled eyes. What do I mean by that? Before Jesus was even born, she recognized Him. John the Baptist, the child in her womb, leapt with joy at the Messiah in Mary’s womb. And Elizabeth had eyes of faith to see what it meant. She knew God was sending His son, Jesus, into the world. And if you think about it, a miracle of this magnitude—the Savior being born into the world through the virgin Mary—would not be too inconceivable to Elizabeth. She had already witnessed a miracle happen in her own life. In fact, the baby she was carrying was living proof that God is powerful and almighty.
In her old age God blessed her barren womb with a growing child, who would become the last prophet to proclaim the coming Messiah (like Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Ezekiel did before him). John’s first work as a prophet was recognizing the superiority of Jesus as the Messiah, even in the womb.
Do you know who Jesus is? Do you have spirit-filled eyes that see and believe what the Scriptures say about Him? Elizabeth told us plainly what she knew when she called Mary “the mother of my Lord.” Jesus is truly Lord over all. But that is only one of His many titles. The Bible gives us many of Jesus’ names:
The Almighty; Alpha and Omega; Amen; Author of Life; Bread from Heaven; Bread of Life; Chief Shepherd; Christ; Consolation of Israel; Counselor; Deliverer; Everlasting Father; Immanuel; Faithful and True Witness; The Gate; God; God With Us; Good Shepherd; Heir of All Things; High Priest; Holy and Righteous One; Holy One of Israel; Horn of Salvation; I Am; King of the Jews; King of Kings; Lamb of God; Last Adam; Light of the World; Lion of the Tribe of Judah; Lord of Lords; Lord of Glory; Man of Sorrow; Master; Mediator; Messiah; Mighty God; Morning Star; Our Passover Lamb; Pioneer and Perfecter of Our Faith; Prince of Peace; Rabbi; Resurrection and Life; Righteous One; Ruler of God’s Creation; Savior; Son of Man; Son of David; Son of the Most High; Spiritual Rock; the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and Wonderful Counselor.
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He promises that the Holy Spirit will come and live in our hearts. He will change us from the inside out. That’s when we get those spirit-filled eyes and can pray for God to show us opportunities to join Him in His work. Truly, God did not have to show Elizabeth what He was doing in bringing the Messiah to the world through Mary. But due to her faith, Elizabeth was able to see what was happening. May that be our same prayer as we walk with Jesus—that He would give us spirit-filled eyes to see people as He sees them and to see His kingdom come here on earth.
“When darkness lay upon this earth,
A glorious light did shine;
God sent a Gift of priceless worth
And showed His love divine.”
