Kindness

DAY 7 OF 7

Fruit of the Spirit

What is kindness? As you reach for your definition, notice how many of the things we associate with kindness are already alongside it in the famous Fruit of the Spirit list in Galatians 5. Patience (forbearance), goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness are the terms we can use interchangeably with kindness – kindness as a variation on goodness, or gentleness as another way to say "be kind."

The Fruit of the Spirit suggests something else to us. Kindness is its own thing, a distinct facet of human flourishing empowered by the Holy Spirit. As we keep reflecting upon kindness, what emerges is a prominent other-person aspect to it. Not that the other eight elements of the Fruit of the Spirit are purely internal. But kindness conjures a portrait of providing help, care, and compassion when it’s sorely lacking or difficult to do. Maybe kindness is patience in action. Perhaps kindness is goodness lived out or gentleness shared. Kindness takes love for a neighbor – and an enemy – to a practical degree. Consideration, generosity, and friendliness flow through the stream of kindness.

Kindness might be difficult to pin down but we all know it when we experience it. The tender warmth of a kind person can uplift our soul even if their words, actions, or support are minimal. Nourished by the Holy Spirit, kindness can blossom through us to bless others.

About this Plan

Kindness

Kindness is both a choice and a Fruit of the Spirit. We need to be intentional, but the closer we get to God, the easier it will get! Ask the Lord to help you demonstrate kindness today, and “don’t underestimate the impact and power this can have to transform and restore not just your life, but the lives of many around you.” (Not Just a Verb – Lucy Weil)
