A Love Worth Sharing: The Love That Made Us
Advent begins like the whole of Creation began: with Love.
In 1 John 4:16, the Apostle John reminds us that God is Love. John goes on to say in verse 19 that we love because God first loved us.
Love creates, so God created. Love shares, and so God made a Universe to share with. Love overflows and God's Love overflowed into the Gift of His Son, Jesus - the whole reason we celebrate Christmas.
But that's only the start. We see in Genesis 1:27 that we've all been made in God's Image - so the impetus to create and to reach out in love are part of our design. God is Love; that's why we're at our best when we live in kindness, generosity and selflessness.
Jesus taught that it's better to give than receive; that the Greatest Commandment is to first love God and then second, to love our neighbors as ourselves.
Love brings life and light and joy. Love can alter the trajectory of a person's life, as it did for Zahen and Katty from Colombia.
While Zahen eagerly anticipated Christmas, her mom, Katty, used to dread it. Because of poverty, Katty could never afford to give her daughter any gifts.
But that all changed when Zahen was able to register with a Compassion project run by her local church. And so, last Christmas, thanks to the generosity of her sponsor, Zahen received a doll. Her beaming smile said it all! "We've seen God's Love in many ways," says her mom.
We hope that this short devotional series for Advent will help draw you deeper into God's Love. Advent is an opportunity to slow down and reflect, not only on God's Love for each of us but also on how, as His Image-Bearers, we can share that Love with others.
Let’s pray...
God of Love, remind us of who we are as people who are made in Your Image. Help us pour out your Loving Kindness into the world around us. Thank You for loving us. Help us to love You, and to love others, just as You've created us to do. In Jesus' Name we pray, Amen.
