Becoming an Ally Leader

DAY 2 OF 4

It’s easy to hear without truly listening. How often do we let our minds wander when someone else is speaking? Real listening requires intentionality, focus, and, most importantly, a willingness to put ourselves aside to engage with someone else’s experience fully. The Bible speaks clearly about the power of listening: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19). Listening in this way transforms our conversations. It’s a gift to others and to ourselves as it allows us to understand the world through their eyes.

Imagine Jesus sitting with His disciples, listening intently to their concerns and doubts. He didn’t just hear words—He heard hearts. As Ally Leaders, we must strive to do the same. Active listening means putting away distractions, suspending judgment, and immersing ourselves in someone else’s story, even if it’s vastly different from our own. When we do this, we communicate respect, compassion, and a willingness to learn.

Think about a time when you felt truly heard. What did it mean to you? How did it change your view of the person listening to you? That’s the power you have to offer others when you listen actively. Today, take time to have a conversation where your only goal is to listen, not to respond or share your own thoughts. Ask follow-up questions, repeat back what you’ve heard, and make the other person feel seen and valued.

Let's Pray: Dear God, grant me the patience to listen with empathy and compassion. Teach me to understand others as You understand them and to respond in ways that honor You. Help me quiet my own thoughts so that I may truly hear the hearts of those around me.
