The Angel’s Announcement
'And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”'
Angels are created as spiritual beings. They have limited knowledge, meaning they do not know all things as God does (Matthew 24:36) but have greater knowledge than humans. Angels know what God's Word says and are obedient to it (James 2:19; Revelation 12:12). We read throughout scripture that their appearance often causes fear for those they visit.
What causes us to fear? The unknown, the uncontrollable, or when life is in danger. An angelic appearance might encapsulate all of these. Yet, they strive to defuse fear and bring hope to the nativity story. “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news (nothing bad will happen – you are not in danger) that will cause great joy for all the people.” (the future may feel uncontrollable, but there will be joy).
Viewpoint Reflection
When have circumstances made life seem uncontrollable? God’s Word assures believers that, no matter what life’s circumstances bring, there is a constant thread of God’s goodness available to us.
'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.' (Romans 8:28)
Remember the essence of this verse today when something unforeseen or uncontrollable happens.
