Define Your Future Self
Once you have a firm grasp of who you are, the next step is to define who you want to become. This involves setting a vision for your future self—one that aligns with your Purpose and the principles of a Vintage Gentleman, as outlined in this series of devotionals titled “Be a Gentleman.” Defining your future self is an act of faith and intentionality, guided by a commitment to growth and transformation.
Begin with a clear vision. What kind of man do you aspire to be? Envision a future where your strengths are fully realized, your weaknesses are continually being addressed, and your identity is anchored in your understanding of your Purpose—a Purpose that is not self-serving but directed toward the betterment of others.
Author and speaker Jordan Peterson put it this way: “The meaning of life, as far as I can tell, is to find a mode of being that is so meaningful that the fact that life is suffering is no longer relevant.” What vision is so compelling for you that hardships pale in contrast to the opportunity it gives you to make a difference in this world?
The supreme Model we have in Scripture of someone with a compelling vision is Jesus Himself. In Hebrews 12:2, we read, “For the joy set before him, [Jesus] endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” What vision gives you joy? What vision motivates you even to endure scorn as you pursue the rewards that vision can deliver once you achieve it?
Write down a clear vision of who you want to become. Picture what a typical day in the life of your future self might look like. Ensure this vision aligns with your understanding of your Divine Purpose, core values, and beliefs.
Your values and beliefs are the compass that guides your decisions and actions. Define what principles are non-negotiable in your life. Integrity, honesty, courage, and humility should be at the forefront. These values will serve as your guideposts as you navigate life’s challenges and opportunities.
Add a summary of your values and beliefs to your vision. Take time to reflect on what you’ve written, and bring it before the Lord in prayer.
God, help me to clearly identify and express my vision and values.
