Day 5 – IF YOU HAVE JESUS, YOU HAVE EVERYTHING

When I was in law school, I rented a cheap little cottage next to my favorite surf spot in San Diego for a few hundred dollars a month. It sounds charming, but truth be told, it was pretty gross. Not much worked in the house, and only one burner on the stove would light up. But that was okay because I only had one pot to cook in. Like most other grad students, I was stone broke.

I would get my one-burner stove going and cook pasta most nights for dinner. Sometimes I would throw in a stick of butter to make it healthy (not) and taste like something. I’m obviously not a foodie, but I never felt like I was lacking anything.

One of the psalms David wrote while he was on the run for his life was about this same thing. He wrote that even during a time of immense hardship, if we are chasing after God, we lack nothing. These are bold words to say when you have been threatened with death and are having to scrounge for bread just to survive.

But if David could say them in his situation, I could say the same while living with a one-burner stove. Sure, there might have been other things I was wishing for, but I had everything I needed with what I had. The same is true for you too. You’ve got everything you need in Jesus.

You have enough. If you find yourself wanting to add to what you have to find your joy, remind yourself it is Jesus’ love that ties everything you have together. It’s not pasta He gives us; it’s love and patience and time and grace. And He has given us all equal amounts of these if we want to access them.

Take stock of what you have today. What you have is enough, and Jesus is enough.

Prayer:

Jesus, you are the only one worth chasing after. You fill me with joy and peace all the days of my life. In you I have everything I need!
