'Do as I do.' What is Jesus actually asking from you?

Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a familiar picture: two houses built on different foundations when a storm hits. Both houses look fine when the weather is calm, but when the storm hits, the difference appears.. One collapses completely. The other stands firm.

The difference isn’t the storm. The difference is the foundation.

Jesus says the foundation is this: hearing His words and doing them.

Hearing without doing is like building on sand — it may look stable for a while, but it won’t hold. Hearing and obeying is building on the rock. That rock is Jesus Himself.Do you hear Jesus’ words? What do you do with them?

The crowds loved listening to Jesus. They were amazed at His teaching. But amazement isn’t the same as discipleship. Disciples are people who hear, follow, and obey. People who trust Jesus enough to put His words into practice in real everyday life.

When you read through the Sermon on the Mount again, you see that Jesus teaches in ways that are simple, direct, and incredibly challenging:

So, act.

Love your enemies.
Forgive those who hurt you.
Give generously.
Pray honestly.
Don’t judge.
Don’t be afraid.
Seek His kingdom.
Let your light shine.
Be the salt of the earth.

These aren’t nice ideas to think about — they are instructions from the Master. And acknowledging Jesus as Master means He gets to lead. He gets to speak. He gets to form the way you live.

So pause for a moment. Be honest with yourself. If you ask Jesus, “What have You taught me that I know but still haven’t put into practice?” — what comes to mind? Where is He nudging you to obey?

Following Jesus is not only believing His words but living them.
This is how you build your life on rock.
This is how you learn to stand — even when the storm comes.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I want to build my house on You. Make me not only a listener but a doer of Your word. Show me where I need to obey, and give me the courage to act. Amen.
