Sleep: What Does the Bible Say?

DAY 5 OF 5

What Does the Bible Say About Sleep?

The Bible teaches that sleep is a good gift from God, yet it also warns us about the dangers of sleeping too much or at the wrong times. There are moments when we need a full eight hours to restore our bodies and minds, while other times may require us to function on just three hours due to pressing responsibilities or urgent situations. It’s essential to discern when to rest and when to be active, balancing our sleep with the tasks God has set before us. In the midst of our busy lives, we are called to pray consistently, maintaining our connection with God regardless of our schedule. Ultimately, sound sleep stems from a deep, unwavering belief in God and His love for us. When we trust in His goodness and sovereignty, we can rest peacefully, knowing that He is in control of our circumstances, allowing us to embrace both our sleep and our responsibilities with faith and confidence.

Discussion Question:
How can we cultivate the discipline to balance our sleep, responsibilities, and prayer life, ensuring that we are resting at the right times and fulfilling our obligations?

Closing Prayer:
Gracious Father, thank You for the gift of sleep and the rest that it brings. Help us to recognize the importance of balancing our need for rest with our responsibilities and our call to prayer. Grant us wisdom to discern the right times for sleep and activity, and strengthen our faith in Your love and care for us. May our trust in You allow us to rest soundly and serve diligently. Guide us in our daily lives, helping us to maintain a healthy rhythm of work, rest, and connection with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 4

About this Plan

Sleep: What Does the Bible Say?

What does the Bible say about sleep? This is an important question considering that anywhere from one-third of our life will be spent on earth with our eyes closed, slumbering away in our beds. That’s a lot of time sleeping! So what does God think about sleep? Can we sleep too much, too little, and how can we use sleep the way God intended? Sleep, like everything else God has made, is good when it’s used right but also has the potential to be greatly misused.
