Walking With Jesus

DAY 6 OF 7

Joy and sorrow

Following Jesus can too easily become an invitation to a life of serene bliss and uninterrupted success, which is one reason why so many who set out on the path of discipleship later fall by the wayside. Walking with Jesus was not what they expected. It didn’t turn out to be an insurance policy against setback and suffering.

Jesus promised that those who walked with Him would endure trials and sorrows. He Himself didn’t have an easy life, and so it would be for His disciples. What saves this from being a message of gloom is that this same Jesus urges His followers to take heart. It seems He promises His people three things: trouble, peace, and joy. And we can also take heart because Jesus is our companion in all situations. He is no religious wimp: He is the true master of the universe. He doesn’t promise us constant victories because, while He has won the supreme victory over death, we still live in an out-of-shape world where Jesus’ victory is not lived out.

Nor does He promise us constant happiness. Life is too complex and imperfect for that. Remember that happiness is an emotional response to favourable circumstances, whereas joy is glad confidence in God no matter what the circumstances.

Walking with Jesus may have us come through shadowy or dark places as well as bright and encouraging landscapes. It’s not constant gloom or constant cheerfulness. But rather, a constant strong and loving companionship.

About this Plan

Walking With Jesus

If you feel like you are walking this journey called life alone, take heart! Jesus wants to walk with you! ‘He may let us lead, encouraging us from behind, or be out front leading and protecting us. Other times right next to us as we talk to each other (that’s called prayer).’ (Who Is Your Walking Partner? - Robbie Parkin)
