Expect the UnexpectedSample
Headwinds Are Coming!
The battle will be rough at times.
Any time we attempt something great for God we need to anticipate "headwinds." As athletes, we can have a great influence on our society. When we attempt to leverage our influence to benefit the Kingdom, the enemy will increase his efforts to thwart us, often attacking our family and personal identity. Think of the story of Job! Other leaders too will share the same kind of challenging experiences when they take bold steps of faith.
On a personal level, I have broken ribs right before a major sports ministry weekend. My wife was diagnosed with cancer just prior to a major ministry gathering. Our pet became sick as I was about to leave on a 16-hour flight. A key player in the same position as me was seriously injured just before the playoffs. I had no time for other ministry. You will know many stories of others dealing with similar headwinds!
You ask, “Why is this?”
It’s because we’re in a battle and it’s not against flesh and blood but against the principalities of darkness. Our opponent is wily, always scheming to derail our ministry and the work of the Church. But we take heart knowing the enemy’s efforts will not prevail!
There are two dangers! We don’t want to underestimate the enemy and his forces. But we also don’t have to live in fear of him; he is defeated. We aren’t dismayed but take courage. We clothe ourselves in the full armor of God. We mobilize prayer support. We "go for it." doing everything with all our heart unto Him! And we remember that even if we face hardship, the battle must be fought but thankfully we know the war is won! In Christ, we are more than conquerors!
Scripture to ponder:
Ephesians 6:10-12
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Key Lesson: Unexpected challenges probably mean you are fighting the right battle!
