Living LifeWise: Parable of the SowerSample

Living LifeWise: Parable of the Sower

DAY 3 OF 5

Several years into my career, I was promoted to lead a team for the first time. I was thrilled for new opportunities, but I didn’t expect the particularly tough season that lay ahead. I felt confident and motivated to make a difference but the reality of the situation soon set in. The workload was overwhelming, the expectations were high, and I began to face criticism from colleagues who didn’t support my new role.

As the pressure mounted, my initial enthusiasm faded. I found myself questioning whether I was up to the challenge. It was during this time that I realized how easy it is to embrace something new when things are going well but how difficult it is to stay committed when the going gets tough.

My situation at work made me reflect on my faith. How often had I received God’s Word with joy, only to doubt and falter when trials came?

In the parable of the sower, Jesus described seed falling on rocky ground. Though it grew up quickly, it was scorched by the sun and withered. The seed that falls on rocky ground represents those who initially receive the message of the gospel with enthusiasm, but when the challenges arise, their faith quickly withers because it has no deep roots.

Following Jesus means more than just accepting the truth of God’s Word; it means holding onto that truth, especially when we face distress or persecution. In truthfulness, we can be honest about the challenges we face as Christians and prepare our hearts to endure them.

Endurance requires intentional effort such as regular time in Scripture, prayer and community with other believers. These practices help us stand firm when the rocky ground of life threatens to uproot our faith.

Reflect: Reflect on the truths about God that encourage you most. Think about how you can develop deep roots in truthfulness through consistent Bible study and prayer.

  • Do you want to give up on God when life is hard? Why or why not?
  • How can you stand firm in your faith?
  • How would you encourage someone who begins to doubt God?

Pray: Ask God to help you develop a strong foundation in His truth so you can stand firm in your faith when trials come. Pray for courage to hold onto His Word and trust that He is with you in every challenge.

About this Plan

Living LifeWise: Parable of the Sower

The whole Bible points to Jesus. When we encounter the gospel in Scripture, Jesus changes our desires, actions and character to be more like His. This 5-day study plan is designed to help you establish a consistent, daily quiet time with God and reflect deeply on the parable of the sower and the importance of truthfulness in the Christian life.
