6 Devotions to Nurture Your Mental Health

DAY 4 OF 6

Words of Truth

Words have power. We all know this. We all have seen how affirming someone’s words can be. We have also seen how damaging they can be. Even our own words are a direct line to our hearts and minds. The words we choose to speak over ourselves will take a toll on our minds and shift how we view things. It is up to us to decide what kind of words we will speak over ourselves.

We can fall into the trap of thinking that just because we are not saying harsh words verbatim, we are not doing harm to our minds and even our mental health. We start to think that if we feel like a failure, then we can bully our mind without actually saying, “I am a failure.” The Enemy wants us to think that we can speak ill about ourselves if we sugarcoat it. He wants us to believe that we are playing it safe when, in fact, we are slowly weighing down our minds with lies.

How do we break this cycle? How do we reverse the damage caused by what we have spoken into existence? We speak the truth, the truth that is found in Scripture itself. We can usually discern truth from lies simply by seeing what is written in God’s Word. Then we can choose to tell ourselves God’s truth instead of Satan’s lies.

Here are some truths to speak over yourself daily:

  • I am a child of a Father who loves me.
  • My worth is not defined by failure.
  • Jesus sits with me and loves me.
  • I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
  • God’s truth is bigger than the Enemy’s lies.
  • My mind is worthy of kindness.
  • Jesus loves me unconditionally.

What negative words about yourself do you find yourself repeating? Reflect on the power of God’s Word and choose one sentence of God’s truth to speak over yourself today.

Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of your Word, which allows me to combat the Enemy’s lies with the truth. Amen.
