The Role of the Holy Spirit in Evangelism

Read and meditate on Acts 1:8.

The Holy Spirit has a vital role in empowering us to be witnesses for Christ.

When we ‘go rogue’ in sharing our faith, i.e. without praying, seeking God’s wisdom or aligning our hearts with the Spirit of God, we can suffer fewer results than we had hoped for or expected.

I remember the first time I saw someone come to Jesus after I had shared my faith with them. It is a prized memory in my life as I felt so involved in the process of seeing them go from death to life.

The essential factor that separates this occasion from the other times I have shared my faith with others is that I prayed and petitioned God for the life of this individual.

I’m not saying that God cannot move when we are surprised by an evangelistic opportunity. He can and He absolutely does. But that is His prerogative, not ours.

I believe that it is the best course of action to lay the groundwork of prayer before approaching a moment of evangelism.

This can look like a short, ‘Lord, please use me in this person’s journey to finding you, in Jesus’ name, amen.’ Or it can be years of petitioning Heaven for the life of an individual.

Either way, one fact remains true – it is not by our own strength or ability that we share the Gospel, but through the Holy Spirit’s guidance and power.

Our deepest longing may be to see a family member saved. Your prayers for that member of your family matter. They are powerful and effective in the Kingdom of Heaven. But it is God who saves, not us.

Our job is to pray, prepare and share. It is solely the Lord’s work — whom He chooses to save.

Depend on the power of God, the truth of Jesus, and the presence of the Holy Spirit to guide you in all of your evangelistic efforts. He will not steer you wrong.

Father God,

I pray for a fresh infilling of your Holy Spirit in my life. Your presence with me is what makes all the difference, and I trust you to guide me in all my efforts to see souls saved for your Kingdom.

I also pray for guidance in how to share my faith with others. I do not want my efforts to fall to the ground, but to bear much fruit. Give me the wisdom to be effective in sharing my faith.

Amen.

Action Step: Spend time in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to lead you to someone who needs to hear the Gospel and to give you the words to speak.
