God's Peace for Moms (Psalm 23)

DAY 5 OF 5

“In the House of the Lord Forever.”

At the end of Psalm 23, David concludes saying, “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever,” resolving to spend his entire existence in God’s presence, worshiping him. As we think about what it might look like to devote our days to God in this season of motherhood, let’s explore the idea of worship through three concepts: presence, posture, and pleasure.

First, worshiping God is about a presence to the moment. To worship God requires us to let go of worries or distractions and set our attention on God. We must tune in to where we are and simply acknowledge that God is with us.

Second, worshiping God is about a posture of serving him. If we know Jesus, rather than serving ourselves, we seek to do that which pleases God as we depend upon his power. We are motivated by a desire to show God’s goodness and his love in the way we steward our daily responsibilities and care for our children.

Third, worshiping God is about the pleasure of enjoying him. Worshiping God doesn’t necessarily mean doing something for him. Worship can be as simple as acknowledging God as the Good Giver of your child. It can be treasuring the comfort of his presence or thanking him for an aspect of who he is.

Just the mere fact that God accepts and enjoys our worship can lead us to worship. How incomprehensible is it that the God of the universe values our feeble and imperfect love for him! And yet, think about how you feel when your child expresses even the smallest sign of love for you: their trust in you when they fall asleep on your chest or a whispered “I love you” as they wrap their arms around your neck. As we delight in the love of our child, so God delights in our worship of him.

Today, practice bringing yourself to the present, posturing your heart in service to God, and enjoying the pleasure of simply knowing him.
