Made New: An Ephesians Book StudySample
Relationships.
In this final chapter of his letter to Ephesus, Paul examines the dynamics of two critical relationships: family life and work relationships.
Paul begins by urging children to honor their parents, not just obey them begrudgingly, but to respect their position and authority and value their guidance. This directive isn’t just about maintaining order at home. It’s about nurturing a relationship of trust and mutual respect, setting a foundation for a flourishing life. And while not everyone is a parent, we all have parental figures with whom we can exercise this instruction.
As a parent, I resonate deeply with these verses. They remind me that my role extends beyond providing for my children’s physical needs. It’s about shaping their character and nurturing their faith. It challenges me to model patience, grace, and wisdom as I guide them through life’s challenges. Whether we are molding young children or, as I am now, coaching adult children, Paul’s words ring true.
Paul’s words to fathers (and, by extension, parents) are equally profound. He cautions against leading children to anger or discouragement, instead urging us to raise them wisely with Godly discipline and instruction. This means creating healthy environments where correction is balanced with lots of encouragement and rules are enforced with love and understanding.
At the time of Paul’s writing, slaves had a vital role in most households. But if Paul were writing today, his address would be to employers and employees. Today, this serves as a reminder to uphold human dignity in every sphere of life, advocating for justice and equality. He emphasizes fairness and respect, urging employers to treat their workers justly and employees to work diligently and honestly, underscoring the Christian values of integrity and mutual respect in all relationships.
In essence, Paul encourages us to build deep relationships marked by respect, fairness, and love—relationships that reflect God’s character and create environments where individuals can thrive and grow.
Response
1. As Paul describes working and serving “wholeheartedly,” he frames it around the truth that we ultimately serve God when we serve others. How does this fresh perspective impact and change your approach to serving and working?
2. Think of a situation where you had to submit to someone else’s authority. Why is this posture of submission so difficult for us? Why is it also so helpful? If you are in a position of authority, how are you reflecting Godly character towards those you lead?
3. Take some time to think about the two-sided relationships in your life (parent/child, employer/employee). Prayerfully consider how you can respond in a most Christ-like manner.
