God’s Sovereign Plan for Salvation
In the fourth devotional, Paul continues to elaborate on the depth of God’s plan of salvation, highlighting the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. He reveals that, after hearing the word of truth—the gospel of our salvation—and believing, we were "sealed" with the promised Holy Spirit. To better understand this passage, it is important to explore the meaning of the Greek words used by Paul: sphragizo (to seal) and arrabon (pledge).
The Greek word sphragizo means "to seal" and was often used in the ancient world to indicate ownership and authenticity. Seals were marks made on documents, letters, or properties to authenticate and protect the content. A seal showed that something belonged to someone and was under that owner’s protection. When Paul says we were "sealed" with the Holy Spirit, he is affirming that God has placed His mark of ownership on us. The Holy Spirit is the evidence that we belong to God and that He recognizes us as His own. This seal is a mark of security and protection, guaranteeing that we are under God's care and authority.
Furthermore, Paul uses the term "arrabon" to describe the Holy Spirit as the "pledge" of our inheritance. The Holy Spirit is the first installment of our eternal inheritance, a foretaste of what is to come, and a guarantee that God will complete His work of redemption in us.
Paul also mentions that all this is for the "praise of His glory." The Greek word for "glory" is doxa, which means splendor, honor, and majesty. God sealed us with the Holy Spirit and gave us the pledge of our inheritance so that, in everything, His splendor and majesty would be exalted. Our salvation is not just about us; it is about the demonstration of God’s greatness. He saved us, sealed us, and gave us an eternal inheritance so that, in everything, His name would be glorified.
As we reflect on this truth, we realize that our salvation is a complete work of God, planned from eternity, executed in Christ, and guaranteed by the Holy Spirit. It does not depend on our merits or efforts but on God’s sovereign and gracious purpose. He chose us, predestined us, sealed us, and guaranteed our inheritance so that we might live for the praise of His glory.
Therefore, as we live out our faith, we must always remember that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and that our inheritance is secure. This should give us confidence, peace, and deep joy, knowing that we belong to God and that He is faithful to complete what He has begun in us. May we live with gratitude and in response to God’s great love and grace, reflecting His glory in every area of our lives.
