Whether you’re new to fasting, hadn’t done it in a while or you’re a seasoned faster, fasting is an amazing personal journey.
People often ask why we fast or how to do it, and those are fantastic questions. Each fast is unique and there are plenty of reasons to fast.
Jesus once said, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Before Jesus faced the crucifixion, He fasted to prepare Himself for what was to come. Fasting helped Him humble Himself before God and fulfill the purpose God had called Him for.
The book of Mathew puts it perfectly: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
When I did this fast the first time, He was warning me there would be many obstacles to overcome and I wanted to overcome them to fulfill God's purpose in that season. If you’re here, you’re likely journeying a season’s transition for which you need to stay focused in God to seek protection over you, yours and everything that belongs to you along the way.
Ezra proclaimed a fast to humble before God of for the same.
And guess what? They experienced victory!
Esther also knew the power of fasting and prayer. she declared a fast that her people would be saved from death, even willing to give her life… And what happened? Victory!
We can't forget Daniel's fast, which is a powerful example of honoring God. Throughout his fast, he chose to eat only vegetables.
As you continue on this journey of fasting and prayer, remember that more than the length of time or the specifics of what you fast, the most important thing is humbling yourselves before God . Trust that God sees your heart and desires to bring forth incredible victory and purpose through your obedient and humble spirit.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, show me anything I need to fast from during this time. Guide me in choosing an area of my life that needs transformation and surrender. Grant me the discipline and perseverance to stay committed. May this time humble me before You and bring about the desired changes in my life, my family, and my journey into the new year. In Jesus' name, Amen.
