The Book of MarkSample
Mark chapter 6 has some of the most famous miracles that Jesus ever performed. From walking on water to feeding the 5000, we see many miracles in this chapter, but the way this chapter begins is what I really want us to focus on. Jesus is visiting his hometown of Nazareth and is attempting to work miracles, but because of the unbelief of the people in the town, he is unable to do so other than laying on hands and healing a few sick people. Jesus is unable to work due to a lack of faith. He even marvels at this in verses 4-6 “Then Jesus told them, ‘A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.’ And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.”
There were many ways we could go when we look at Chapter 6, but I want to stick with the idea of faith and how faith moves mountains. Mark set up the importance of faith at the beginning of this chapter by showing how a lack of faith can have just as much impact as the greatest of faith. What are you believing in God for, and what are some areas of your life you aren’t willing to believe that God can work? Maybe it’s a personal struggle that you’ve always had. Maybe it’s a family member that you’ve been praying for.
Question for today:
Do you have a faith that enables Him to go to work and do miracles, or are you lacking belief, and therefore keeping Him from doing what you’re asking Him for?
Prayer:
Jesus, I honor you today with faith. I believe that You are the Son of God and that You have all power to work miracles here and now. Help me to believe and have faith today. In Your name, Amen.
