The Lord’s Prayer- Jesus’ Example for UsSample
The Father's Provision
"Give us today our daily bread."
In this simple phrase from the Lord's Prayer, Jesus teaches us an important truth - we are dependent on God to provide for our needs. The imagery of "daily bread" points back to the story of God supernaturally feeding the Israelites with manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16).
Just like the Israelites, we are not meant to store up far more than we need for each day. Rather, Jesus instructs us to ask our Heavenly Father to give us what we require, one day at a time. This fosters an attitude of daily trust and reliance on God - not just for ourselves, but for those around us as well.
You see, the "daily bread" Jesus refers to encompasses far more than just physical food. He is speaking of our total dependence on God - not just for food, but for every spiritual, emotional, and relational need we and others have.
Do you need wisdom for a difficult decision? Ask your Father. Are you struggling with anxiety or fear? Bring those needs to Him. Longing to see a loved one draw closer to Christ? Ask the Bread of Life to satisfy their soul.
God is the giver of "every good and perfect gift" (James 1:17). He delights in providing for His children, often in miraculous ways. But His provision goes beyond the material. He wants to nourish us, and those we care about, with His comfort, His peace, His strength - everything required for us to flourish.
As you pray today, don't be afraid to bring your needs before your Heavenly Father, knowing that He is able and eager to care for you. And be sure to also lift up the needs of family, friends, and your broader community, trusting that God will faithfully supply according to His riches in glory.
Pray
Take a moment to reflect on your current needs - physical, emotional, or spiritual. Bring those specific requests to God, trusting that He will provide for you day by day. Then, ask God to meet the needs of others you know who are struggling, and pray for His provision to reach far beyond just yourself.
