As a Man Thinks, So Is His HeartSample
THE THOUGHTS I HAD WERE FALSE
“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?” Luke 12:25-26
In yesterday’s study, I was in the emergency room at our local hospital, overly concerned about things that weren’t helping to lower my blood pressure. After many vials for lab work, the ER doctor pulled up a stool next to me. “We don’t just give out blood pressure medication to lower it, we want to get to what is causing it,” he said.
In my thoughts, I was sure the next words out of his mouth would be MRI, and being a woman of faith, I’m ashamed to admit fear took over what might be going on. The Doctor continued, “I want to run some further tests that are more complex.” I interjected and said, “I know you are thinking MRI, but I am highly claustrophobic and my tremors would come unglued if you put my head in a cage to hold it still.”
Now that isn’t something a woman of faith should be speaking or thinking, but in my humanness, that is what came out. Instead of resting with my focus and mind on Luke 12: 25-26, I caved to my feelings.
The doctor was cheerful, with an excellent bedside manner, and he said, “No, no MRIs, we want to do a quick CAT scan of your brain to make sure there are no tumors or brain bleeds.” He then explained exactly how long it would take, that it was open, and I wouldn’t be in the machine for more than a minute.
My blood pressure was already in the 190’s and here I added more unnecessary stress to something I thought would happen that didn’t.
Oh, when will this girl learn to trust Him more? Not only were there no MRIs, but tomorrow, we will discover what the Holy Spirit spoke into me!
PRAYER: Oh Lord, help us to stop allowing our feelings to get in the way of our faith. It is when we go through these issues of life that we need to put into action what we know to be true! Help us to endure pain, sickness, and loneliness by instilling in us that You are ever-present! In Jesus’ Name. Amen

About this Plan
I’ve read the proverb many times, yet it wasn’t until an emergency room visit that the reality set in. Many of us have thoughts that linger in our heads; they become opinions. Join me in this study as I unravel the depth of this proverb and analyze if your thoughts are pleasing to God!
