Reckoning (S2-E7)Sample
Who is this Man?
"Who is He anyway?"
In this episode of The Chosen, you will see several people trying to get an answer to exactly that question....
Who is this Jesus? We can ask ourselves that question, too. What answer would you give?
Quintus
The Roman commander. He wants to know if Jesus is a danger to himself, to good order and to peace. He wants to be sure Jesus is not in the way of his political position. He wants to know who Jesus is so he knows he is safe.
Atticus
The elite soldier who has been following Jesus for some time. You notice he becomes fascinated by the unexpected he sees. What kind of man is this? And so he goes to investigate. Where will this end?
Shmuel
"Zealous for the law" - that's how you could describe him. He knows the law inside out and protects it. He is not so much into politics, but he is into a God of law and truth. At least, from his point of view. Shmuel also wonders: who is He?
The disciples
They are so close to Jesus that they see so much of Him, but they don't understand Him. It's all so strange, unexpected.
Who is He anyway? In the text we read today, we hear them say it literally. "Even the wind and the water listen to Him. Who is He anyway?"
The disciples get to discover more and more of Jesus. What a privilege to be so close to Him.
Today this question also comes to you. Who do you think Jesus is? You may approach Him, like Quintus, Atticus, or Shmuel. Each with their own motives. Safety, interest, or justice.
But you may also live with this question - with this mystery - as a disciple of Him. I don't think you will find the complete answer. But by being close to Him, you will become more and more like Him, and the puzzle pieces will fall more and more into place.
Take the following questions to think about:
- Who do you think Jesus is?
- Do you recognize yourself in any of the characters (Quintus / Atticus / Shmuel)?
- Are you a disciple also walking around with that question: Who is this man?
- How are you going to find the answer?
Prayer: "Lord, Your invitation already sounded: ‘Come and see.' Today I want to come and see, come and discover who You are. Thank You for inviting me into this mystery. Teach me more and more, Lord. I would like to know who You are. Amen."
