Hope in the Psalms: Seeing Triumph Over Addiction in the Songs of David

DAY 7 OF 7

As you may have already discovered on your road to recovery, it is impossible to will your way to lifelong sobriety.

You have to give up and give everything to God. He will fight your battles for you, a promise we see with crystal clarity in Psalm 21:8-12. Let’s take a look at some of these passages:

“Your hand will find out all your enemies; your right hand will find out those who hate you… If they plan evil against you, if they devise mischief, they will not succeed. For you will put them to flight; you will aim at their faces with your bows.”

It's pretty intense stuff!

But as we noted earlier, when we see words like “enemies” in the Psalms, it is appropriate to think of those as our addictions, and when we make that substitution, this passage comes alive with victory!

Jesus isn’t just fighting on your side—He is fighting FOR you! You do the surrendering; Jesus does the fighting.

As you continue your recovery journey, never lose sight of this truth. Keep surrendering your will to the will of Jesus, stay in touch with your community, and take things one day at a time.

We acknowledged this on the first day of this reading plan, and we will again now: you cannot break the bondage of your addiction on your own—you need God’s help.

But the good news is: you can do this. God’s got you!
