4 Things to Consider Before Dating a Non-ChristianSample
Day 2: Consider What the Bible Says
“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” - 2 Corinthians 6:14
Before you jump into a relationship with someone who isn’t a Christian, it's a good idea to see what the Bible has to say. For example, 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”
This verse speaks to the core of what it means to align yourself closely with someone who doesn’t share your faith. The imagery of being "yoked" together refers to the practice of pairing two animals to work side by side. If they are unequally yoked, their difference in strength or direction can lead to imbalance and inefficiency. Similarly, partnering with someone who does not share your faith can cause spiritual misalignment.
As Christians, we’re instructed not to be unequally yoked, and this instruction is not just to avoid potential conflicts. It's also about creating a relationship where you can grow spiritually and support each other’s faith journeys. When both partners share the same faith, they can encourage one another, pray together, and seek God’s will as a united front. This shared spiritual foundation can be a source of strength, helping you both navigate life's challenges with a common purpose.
Not to mention, differences in fundamental beliefs can create significant challenges. You might find yourselves at odds over important decisions, such as how to raise children, which values to prioritize, or how to spend your time and resources. These differences can strain the relationship and potentially weaken your own faith.
It's important to carefully consider these factors when deciding whether to pursue a relationship with someone who doesn’t share your faith. Remember, God desires the best for you, including relationships that draw you closer to Him.
