Bible Survey: Part TwoSample
The remainder of the book is a series of conversations that Job has with “friends.” For the most part they have a simplistic view of God that says, “God is good to good people, so if you are suffering, it is because you are bad.” Job does not feel he deserves the suffering he is experiencing, which leads to many questions on his part. Today’s reading is the first response God gives Job to his questions. Maybe Job was expecting, “Hey, I’m sorry I put you through this.” Instead he gets, “Since I created everything, do you think I might actually know more than you do?”
That’s probably not what most people think about when they are suffering. Maybe thinking about the nature of God would be a great place to start.
