 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Victories</div><div class="p"> 1In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the Philistines.</div><div class="p"> 2David also defeated the Moabites. He made them lie down on the ground and measured them off with a length of cord. Every two lengths of them were put to death, and the third length was allowed to live. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.</div><div class="p"> 3Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his monument at#8:3 Or his control along the Euphrates River. 4David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers#8:4 Septuagint (see also Dead Sea Scrolls and 1 Chron. 18:4); Masoretic Text captured seventeen hundred of his charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all but a hundred of the chariot horses.</div><div class="p"> 5When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6He put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.</div><div class="p"> 7David took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8From Tebah#8:8 See some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 1 Chron. 18:8); Hebrew Betah. and Berothai, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a great quantity of bronze.</div><div class="p"> 9When Tou#8:9 Hebrew Toi, a variant of Tou; also in verse 10 king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer, 10he sent his son Joram#8:10 A variant of Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold and of bronze.</div><div class="p"> 11King David dedicated these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: 12Edom#8:12 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint and Syriac (see also 1 Chron. 18:11); most Hebrew manuscripts Aram and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek. He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.</div><div class="p"> 13And David became famous after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites#8:13 A few Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint and Syriac (see also 1 Chron. 18:12); most Hebrew manuscripts Aram (that is, Arameans) in the Valley of Salt.</div><div class="p"> 14He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Officials</div><div class="p"> 15David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people. 16Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; 17Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was secretary; 18Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David&#8217;s sons were priests.#8:18 Or were chief officials (see Septuagint and Targum; see also 1 Chron. 18:17)</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">David and Mephibosheth</div><div class="p"> 1David asked, &#8220;Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan&#8217;s sake?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 2Now there was a servant of Saul&#8217;s household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, &#8220;Are you Ziba?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;At your service,&#8221; he replied.</div><div class="p"> 3The king asked, &#8220;Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God&#8217;s kindness?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Ziba answered the king, &#8220;There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4&#8220;Where is he?&#8221; the king asked.</div><div class="p">Ziba answered, &#8220;He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.</div><div class="p"> 6When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.</div><div class="p">David said, &#8220;Mephibosheth!&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;At your service,&#8221; he replied.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid,&#8221; David said to him, &#8220;for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Mephibosheth bowed down and said, &#8220;What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul&#8217;s steward, and said to him, &#8220;I have given your master&#8217;s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. 10You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master&#8217;s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.&#8221; (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)</div><div class="p"> 11Then Ziba said to the king, &#8220;Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.&#8221; So Mephibosheth ate at David&#8217;s#9:11 Septuagint; Hebrew my table like one of the king&#8217;s sons.</div><div class="p"> 12Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba&#8217;s household were servants of Mephibosheth. 13And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king&#8217;s table; he was lame in both feet.</div>

I will turn you over to them for punishment, and they will punish you according to their standards. 25I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you who are left will be consumed by fire. 26They will also strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry. 27So I will put a stop to the lewdness and prostitution you began in Egypt. You will not look on these things with longing or remember Egypt anymore.</div><div class="p"> 28&#8220;For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to deliver you into the hands of those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust. 29They will deal with you in hatred and take away everything you have worked for. They will leave you stark naked, and the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your lewdness and promiscuity 30have brought this on you, because you lusted after the nations and defiled yourself with their idols. 31You have gone the way of your sister; so I will put her cup into your hand.</div><div class="p"> 32&#8220;This is what the Sovereign Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;You will drink your sister&#8217;s cup,</div><div class="q2">a cup large and deep;</div><div class="q1">it will bring scorn and derision,</div><div class="q2">for it holds so much.</div><div class="q1"> 33You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow,</div><div class="q2">the cup of ruin and desolation,</div><div class="q2">the cup of your sister Samaria.</div><div class="q1"> 34You will drink it and drain it dry</div><div class="q2">and chew on its pieces&#8212;</div><div class="q2">and you will tear your breasts.</div><div class="m">I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 35&#8220;Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you have forgotten me and turned your back on me, you must bear the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 36The Lord said to me: &#8220;Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront them with their detestable practices, 37for they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They committed adultery with their idols; they even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to me, as food for them. 38They have also done this to me: At that same time they defiled my sanctuary and desecrated my Sabbaths. 39On the very day they sacrificed their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and desecrated it. That is what they did in my house.</div><div class="p"> 40&#8220;They even sent messengers for men who came from far away, and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, applied eye makeup and put on your jewelry. 41You sat on an elegant couch, with a table spread before it on which you had placed the incense and olive oil that belonged to me.</div><div class="p"> 42&#8220;The noise of a carefree crowd was around her; drunkards were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets on the wrists of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads. 43Then I said about the one worn out by adultery, &#8216;Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is.&#8217; 44And they slept with her. As men sleep with a prostitute, so they slept with those lewd women, Oholah and Oholibah. 45But righteous judges will sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood, because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands.</div><div class="p"> 46&#8220;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Bring a mob against them and give them over to terror and plunder. 47The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses.</div><div class="p"> 48&#8220;So I will put an end to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you. 49You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">6</div><div class="s1">The Seals</div><div class="p"> 1I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, &#8220;Come!&#8221; 2I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.</div><div class="p"> 3When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, &#8220;Come!&#8221; 4Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.</div><div class="p"> 5When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, &#8220;Come!&#8221; I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, &#8220;Two pounds#6:6 Or about 1 kilogram of wheat for a day&#8217;s wages,#6:6 Greek a denarius and six pounds#6:6 Or about 3 kilograms of barley for a day&#8217;s wages,#6:6 Greek a denarius and do not damage the oil and the wine!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, &#8220;Come!&#8221; 8I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.</div><div class="p"> 9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10They called out in a loud voice, &#8220;How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?&#8221; 11Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,#6:11 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God&#8217;s family; also in 12:10; 19:10. were killed just as they had been.</div><div class="p"> 12I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.</div><div class="p"> 15Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16They called to the mountains and the rocks, &#8220;Fall on us and hide us#6:16 See Hosea 10:8. from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17For the great day of their#6:17 Some manuscripts his wrath has come, and who can withstand it?&#8221;</div>

They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10And they cried out in a loud voice:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Salvation belongs to our God,</div><div class="q1">who sits on the throne,</div><div class="q1">and to the Lamb.&#8221;</div><div class="m"> 11All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Amen!</div><div class="q1">Praise and glory</div><div class="q1">and wisdom and thanks and honor</div><div class="q1">and power and strength</div><div class="q1">be to our God for ever and ever.</div><div class="q1">Amen!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Then one of the elders asked me, &#8220;These in white robes&#8212;who are they, and where did they come from?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14I answered, &#8220;Sir, you know.&#8221;</div><div class="p">And he said, &#8220;These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15Therefore,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;they are before the throne of God</div><div class="q2">and serve him day and night in his temple;</div><div class="q1">and he who sits on the throne</div><div class="q2">will shelter them with his presence.</div><div class="q1"> 16&#8216;Never again will they hunger;</div><div class="q2">never again will they thirst.</div><div class="q1">The sun will not beat down on them,&#8217;#7:16 Isaiah 49:10</div><div class="q2">nor any scorching heat.</div><div class="q1"> 17For the Lamb at the center of the throne</div><div class="q2">will be their shepherd;</div><div class="q1">&#8216;he will lead them to springs of living water.&#8217;#7:17 Isaiah 49:10</div><div class="q2">&#8216;And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.&#8217;#7:17 Isaiah 25:8&#8221;</div>

And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.</div><div class="p"> 18Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord&#8217;s table and the table of demons. 22Are we trying to arouse the Lord&#8217;s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?</div>
