Deeper: Developing Deeper Intimacy With God

DAY 2 OF 7

Vulnerability is Required

Before we embark on the journey to develop a deeper relationship with God, it is essential to note that having true intimacy without vulnerability is impossible. Intimacy is described as a deep knowing or familiarity. We often invite God only to the parts we find comfort in sharing. My friend James Clyde frequently says we treat God like a guest visiting our home. We allow God to go in the living room and the kitchen but not the bedroom or the closet. Basically, we are selective about the access we give God.

I’ve also heard it said that God won’t heal what you don’t reveal. You may have heard intimacy broken down like this: “In-to-me-I-see.” The point I’m trying to convey is that true intimacy with God comes when you can be completely vulnerable with God. The great news is that God can handle it, and honestly, He desires it. Jesus said to come to Him, all who are heavy-laden, and He would give us rest. 1 Peter tells us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us.

Speaking of Peter, remember when He walked on water? That took Him being vulnerable enough to say, Lord, I know I can’t walk on water in my own strength, but if it’s you, command me to come out there. In the face of potential embarrassment in front of the other disciples, Peter was vulnerable enough to take the step. Even when Peter did sink after taking His eyes off of Jesus, He cried out, “Lord, save me!” Right on time, Jesus reached out to Peter and pulled him back up. This transformative power of vulnerability is what we should all aspire to.

That is a moment of intimacy that only Peter can testify about. What moment(s) of intimacy with God are you missing out on because you won’t take the step to be vulnerable or open up to God? Revelation 3:20 tells us that He stands at the door and knocks, not just for some, but for every one of us, waiting for us to let Him in. Don’t allow the enemy, insecurities, or lack of trust keep you from being vulnerable with God. Deeper intimacy with God is on the other side of the step you’re afraid to take.
